A surprise film screening at the Telluride Film Festival, presented by A24, has generated industry speculation. The movie is described as a nearly three-hour hybrid project, combining documentary elements, and was recently acquired by the studio in a competitive deal.
The identity of the film remains undisclosed as of today, with festival organizers implementing strict security measures – including the use of Yondr pouches to lock away electronic devices in the Herzog theatre – to maintain the secrecy. The 174-minute film will be followed by a Q&A session.
Several projects were initially considered as possibilities, including Ethan Hawke’s *Highway 99: A Double Album*, but it debuted at Telluride last year. A24’s comedy *Goblin*, starring Ken Branagh and Skyler Gisondo, was also ruled out as it hasn’t begun production. *Famous*, a film with Zac Efron, and Ruben Ostlund’s *The Entertainment System Is Down* were also confirmed not to be the mystery screening, and are not hybrid films.
Sources indicate A24 purchased the film recently, suggesting it wasn’t a long-term studio development. The festival is being lauded for maintaining a genuine mystery, though some critics have expressed frustration with the tight festival schedule.
