Sonos has released a new app and operating system, Sonos 27, following widespread criticism of a previous app update. The company is shifting its focus from being solely a speaker manufacturer to an audio operating system provider, incorporating generative AI features.
Sonos faced significant backlash in 2024 after software updates broke its app, removing features like volume control and accessibility tools. The company responded by considering reverting to the old app, then replacing its CEO and issuing apologies. Now, Sonos is introducing a redesigned app, developed with a “customer-centric feedback listening approach” involving community engagement on platforms like Reddit.
The updated app includes improved tab navigation, better room sorting, and redesigned volume controls. System health views, allowing users to diagnose connection issues, will be released in the fall. A key feature is Sonos 27voice, an early access generative AI integration that enables voice-controlled music requests based on mood. It also supports integration with AI services like ChatGPT through a Model Context Protocol.
Sonos is also introducing customizable AI agents, Sonos Custom Agents, allowing users to tailor agent behavior, including voice options. Brandon Holley, interim hardware lead at Sonos, stated the company aims to be seen as more than just a speaker company, but as an “audio operating system.” Sid Patel, vice president of software at Sonos, acknowledged the apprehension surrounding a “new Sonos app” but emphasized the customer-focused development process. Sonos 27 will function with the Sonos S2 app but not the older S1 app.
