At least 17 people were killed and dozens injured in a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv on July 2, Ukrainian officials reported. The attack involved drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles.
The assault began overnight and continued for hours, targeting multiple locations across the capital city. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, this was the largest attack on Kyiv since the start of the war. Meduza reported that at least 18 people were killed and over 90 injured, with damage reported to 20 apartment buildings.
The Financial Times reported that the attack consisted of 74 missiles and nearly 500 drones. Ukrainian authorities stated they were able to intercept only four of the 24 ballistic missiles launched by Russia, according to Politico EU.
The BBC US reported at least 18 deaths as a result of the attack, while NBC News stated that more than a dozen people were killed across Kyiv. Bloomberg indicated that dozens were injured in addition to the 17 fatalities.
The Washington Times noted this attack occurred alongside continued Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil sector facilities, with Moscow stating the Kyiv attack was retaliation for those actions. The Japan Times reported that the Kremlin vowed to increase “pressure” on Kyiv following the strike.
D.W. stated that ballistic and cruise missiles and drones were used in what Klitschko described as the largest attack on the city since the war began. Meduza also noted that all districts of the Ukrainian capital sustained damage.
The Guardian UK reported that the attack occurred as Russia faces fuel shortages following long-range strikes against its oil refineries.
