Italy’s Fondazione Prada film fund, launched last year, has begun to yield results with Rubaiyat Hossain’s “The Difficult Bride” selected for the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons section. The fund aims to support independent cinema globally without thematic or genre restrictions.
Paolo Moretti, managing the fund in collaboration with Rebecca De Pas, reported receiving approximately 1,200 project applications in its first year. He expressed surprise at the rapid establishment of communication with the film industry and the immediate interest in the fund’s unique format. Moretti noted the fund adapted its structure, increasing the number of readers and collaborators, to ensure each submitted project received thorough consideration.
The fund initially selected 12 projects but ultimately supported 14 after discovering that some applicants had requested less than the maximum available funding, allowing for adjustments. Updates on the progress of these projects, including the selection of Rubaiyat Hossain’s film for Venice, have been received since February.
Moretti explained the fund is evolving its system by separating submissions for projects in production from those in development and post-production to better balance the review process. While there is no strict budget limit, the selected projects generally cost between a few hundred thousand euros and several million euros. Moretti emphasized the fund’s willingness to make exceptions for projects they strongly believe in.
