Manuel Gil Del Real crashed his Porsche 911 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday after losing brake function near the Zanardi Corkscrew. Dramatic video shows the car going airborne, clearing a tire wall, and impacting a tree line. Despite the violent crash, Del Real survived and was airlifted to a local hospital.
The crash occurred as Del Real, driving the No. 270 Porsche, approached the famous Zanardi Corkscrew at the end of the Rahal Straight. According to reports, he appeared to lose brake function. Video footage shows the Porsche approaching the turn at full speed, cresting a hill, and launching over the curb.
The car cleared the tire wall and impacted a catch fence while airborne, breaking apart upon impact with a tree line. Debris and barrier panels showered the hillside.
Porsche Motorsport North America released a statement saying, “Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West driver Manuel Gil Del Real is awake following an on-track incident during Saturday morning’s race at Laguna Seca. “He has been transported to a Salina hospital and is being evaluated and treated,”
