Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables expressed 'tremendous respect' for Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood ahead of Saturday’s game, despite a dominant defensive performance against him last season. Venables noted Underwood’s growth as a true freshman who won nine games and highlighted the changes in Michigan’s offensive system.
Underwood completed 12 of 20 passes Saturday against Western Michigan, including a 47-yard Hail Mary touchdown to win the game. Venables stated, “All of his best days are still in front of him.” He also acknowledged Underwood’s ability to both run and throw the ball, describing him as a “decisive” and “rhythmic” player.
On the Sooners’ side, offensive lineman Jake Maikkula is increasing his practice participation after an injury during a scrimmage last month. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle emphasized Maikkula’s importance to the team, stating, “You can't put a value on what Jake Maikkula means to this football team…what he means to the confidence of his teammates.”
Oklahoma started true freshman Noah Best at center against UTEP, and he rotated between all three interior positions. Sophomore Ryan Fodje is also seeing more practice time, while the availability of star left tackle Michael Fasusi is uncertain due to a shoulder injury. Arbuckle praised the offensive line’s ability to adapt, noting their “excitement and enthusiasm” and “toughness and physicality.”
