Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has expressed doubt over Senne Lammens’ current performance in goal, questioning whether the Belgian shot-stopper is of the quality needed to win the Premier League. Scholes made the comments on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast following a 0-1 defeat to Manchester City and a generally poor start to the season for the club.
Manchester United has secured only four points from their first four league matches despite favorable fixtures. Lammens has conceded seven goals in those four games, a decline in form compared to last season. Scholes highlighted the importance of a “top-class goalkeeper” for any team hoping to win the league, citing examples like Alisson for Liverpool, Raya at Arsenal, Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar for Manchester United. He queried, “what team have you seen win the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper? Lammens might be that; I don't know; I think the jury's probably still out on that, and then you build from the back four, like Arsenal. It's the way Arsenal started three or four years ago.”
Scholes did not definitively state Lammens is not the answer, but suggested that manager Michael Carrick and the club need more time to evaluate his abilities. He stated, “you start from the back, of course you do. Whether Michael's (Carrick) just got to be patient and wait for that, I don't know.” While acknowledging an improvement in the goalkeeping department since Lammens replaced Andre Onana, Scholes’ comments reflect growing concerns about the number of goals conceded recently. Manchester United is scheduled to play Brighton and Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup.
