The NFL and the NFL Players Association are in talks to finalize terms for NFL player participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics flag football competition. The league owners unanimously approved a resolution last year supporting player participation, but further agreements are needed.
Negotiations are focused on several key areas, including standards for field surfaces and medical care for players. The participation schedule must not “unreasonably conflict” with existing NFL commitments. The NFL also seeks to establish injury protections through insurance and receive salary-cap credit if a player is injured during Olympic competition.
The owners’ resolution proposed limiting each country’s Olympic roster to one player per NFL team, and allowing players in a team’s international program to participate for their home country. Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's executive vice president of club business, international and league events, stated at a league meeting that more than 200 players have expressed interest in participating. “They're very serious about the Olympic opportunity,” he said.
The flag football competition, scheduled for July 15–22 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, will include men’s and women’s tournaments with six teams each. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and other league leaders began endorsing the idea after the International Olympic Committee added flag football to the 2028 Games. The NFL believes expanding flag football will broaden the fan base, increase youth participation, and further grow the sport.
