ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the San Diego Padres 7-6 on Saturday after rallying in the seventh inning. The game was marred by an injury to Padres second baseman Luis Rengifo, who was carted off the field with a right knee sprain.
Yandy Diaz knocked in three runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh, and Chandler Simpson followed with a tiebreaking RBI single. The Rays scored four runs in the inning after falling behind. Diaz’s hit came off the base of the center field wall. During the play, Rengifo was injured while attempting to cut down Cedric Mullins at the plate. After his throw sailed wide, two additional runners scored, tying the game at 6. Rengifo required assistance to leave the field and will return to San Diego for further evaluation.
Simpson’s run-scoring single plated Diaz four batters later. The Padres had taken a 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run single by Manny Machado and a delayed double-steal that allowed Fernando Tatis, Jr., to score.
Junior Caminero and Jonathan Aranda homered for the Rays. Aranda’s home run traveled 453 feet to center field. Caminero ended a 15-game home run drought with his solo shot. Kevin Kelly (6-3) earned the win in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings. Bryan Baker recorded his league-leading 39th save with a scoreless ninth inning. Starter Nick Martinez allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings.
Bradgley Rodriguez (3-3) took the loss after failing to record an out while facing four batters in the seventh. Walker Buehler allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out three in five innings. Ty France hit a two-run home run for San Diego.
