Qualcomm engineer Konrad Dybcio has developed a new Linux driver, "asus-glymur-ec," to enhance embedded controller (EC) functionality for ASUS Zenbook A14 and A16 laptops powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 SoC.
The new driver addresses specific differences between the Zenbook’s EC firmware and Qualcomm’s reference design, necessitating a dedicated kernel driver. The "asus-glymur-ec" driver enables the reporting of fan speeds, temperature readings from two sensors, and control over keyboard backlight brightness. It also facilitates communication with the EC during system suspend and resume cycles.
Previously, Qualcomm engineers had already released Linux patches providing basic support for the X2-powered Zenbooks, including the Device Tree. This new driver builds upon that foundation by improving EC functionality. Despite this progress, Phoronix reports it currently has no plans to test Linux on Snapdragon X2 laptops due to budgetary constraints and a lack of review samples from vendors.
