Several films that recently played in theaters will become available on streaming platforms in September, including "Toy Story 5," "Backrooms," "The Mandalorian and Grogu," and "Scary Movie 6."
"Toy Story 5," earning $1.13 billion at the summer box office and becoming the third highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far, will stream on Disney+ beginning September 23. Variety noted the film “escalates in delight…but also has moments that hit you like a gut punch,” adding that the message is to “slow down, be real and play.” The success of "Toy Story 5" is expected to boost streaming numbers for the entire animated franchise.
A24’s horror film, "Backrooms," which grossed $394 million worldwide and became the studio’s highest-grossing movie, will be available on HBO Max starting September 25. Variety’s chief film critic, Owen Gleiberman, praised the film as “an atmospheric freakout” and highlighted Chiwetel Ejiofor as “the perfect presence” for the role. Gleiberman also drew comparisons between director Kane Parsons’ work and the late David Lynch, noting a similar focus on mood and “cosmic sound design.”
Disney+ will also stream "The Mandalorian and Grogu" after a disappointing theatrical run, earning $81 million domestically and $345 million worldwide – significantly less than previous "Star Wars" releases like “The Rise of Skywalker” and “The Last Jedi.” The film, directed by Jon Favreau, follows bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu as they are tasked by Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) to rescue Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White of “The Bear,” to locate an Imperial leader.
Finally, Paramount’s "Scary Movie 6" is now available on Paramount+.
