Mandy Moore discussed her upcoming Hulu series, "The Land," her approach to managing screen time for her children, and her own relationship with technology. She described the new show as a blend of "Friday Night Lights" and "Succession."
Moore shares three children – sons Gus, 5, and Ozzie, 3, and daughter Lou, 2 – with husband Taylor Goldsmith. She utilizes the ABCmouse educational app to occupy her children during travel, appreciating its ability to provide both entertainment and learning opportunities. “I think the entire two-hour flight home, both boys were doing ABCmouse. I feel safe sitting next to them. Like I don’t have to hover. I know they’re not going to go down some rabbit hole. It’s fun to see them look up after each level and be like, ‘I love this. I feel smart. I can do this.’ It’s very sweet,” Moore said.
Moore also admitted to struggling with her own digital habits, relying on the “Brick” app to limit her phone usage. “I don’t have any self-control when it comes to like limiting my digital time on my phone, so I’m a big fan of the Brick,” she stated, adding that she sometimes orders items online impulsively after seeing them on Instagram. “I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, I ordered those weird packing cubes that you can suck all the air out of,’” Moore laughed. “I’m like, ‘I don’t really need these, but I guess I’ll use them now.’ I’m definitely one to fall victim to getting targeted on Instagram.”
Her new Hulu series, "The Land," reunites her with "This Is Us" creator Dan Fogelman. The show, starring Christopher Meloni, William H. Macy, Chloe Bennet and Chace Crawford, centers on a family that owns an NFL team. Moore plays the daughter of the team owner (Macy) with ambitions to take over the organization. “If you love football, if you love family drama, it’s like ‘Friday Night Lights’ and ‘Succession’ all kind of rolled into one,” Moore explained. She admitted to having limited knowledge of the NFL before filming, requiring “crash courses” and meetings with women in similar roles within the league. “I joked I felt like Taylor Swift, where I was like, ‘Oh, I got to learn all about this.’ I mean, it’s different when your boyfriend-slash-husband is like a player, but I truly knew nothing.” The series was filmed in Los Angeles, which Moore expressed gratitude for.
