Manchester United forward JJ Gabriel, 15, has informed the club of his desire to become a free agent. The move comes as a surprise, given Gabriel’s status as a highly-rated prospect within the United youth system.
Gabriel, nicknamed 'Kid Messi', formally notified Manchester United of his intention to cancel his registration with the club. United officials believe the situation is potentially resolvable and are attempting to persuade the forward to remain. They are reportedly puzzled by the reason behind Gabriel’s request.
Prior to informing the club of his desire to leave, Gabriel was slated to be included in the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton. Had he played, he would have become United’s youngest ever player. He previously became the youngest player to represent United in unofficial matches during pre-season, and scored a hat-trick in United’s Uefa Youth League win over Sabah last week.
Michael Carrick, United head coach, has described Gabriel as “a really big talent,” while Ryan Giggs, United’s record appearance maker, has called him a “generational talent.” Gabriel was last year named the youngest ever winner of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year, an award given to United’s academy footballers, and also received the Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season award.
