Jim Geoghan, the co-creator of the Disney Channel sitcom “Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” died on September 6 in Los Angeles at age 79, his daughter Genevieve Geoghan confirmed.
Geoghan co-created and executive produced “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” which starred Cole and Dylan Sprouse, Ashley Tisdale, and Brenda Song. The series, following the lives of twin brothers raised in a hotel, ran for three seasons from 2005 to 2008. It then continued as “The Suite Life on Deck,” following the cast into high school for another three seasons, from 2008 to 2011.
His work on “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” earned him two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Children’s Program in 2007 and 2008. Prior to creating the Disney Channel series, Geoghan worked as a sitcom writer on shows including “Silver Spoons,” “The Facts of Life,” “Boys Will Be Boys,” and “The Van Dyke Show.”
Geoghan also wrote for the stage, with his play “Only Kidding” running off-Broadway for 500 performances. Another play, “Light Sensitive,” premiered at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego and has been produced in over 40 productions across the United States. He began his comedy career in 1973 as a member of the trio Divided We Stand, performing at clubs like the Improvisation Cafe, The Bitter End, and Catch A Rising Star, and touring colleges and nightclubs. He moved to Los Angeles with his wife, Annie, after securing television writing opportunities. Outside of his professional life, Geoghan enjoyed photography and building model boats and planes. He is remembered for his joyous personality, kindness, and humor. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
