HBO Max is producing a psychological thriller series, “Mataviejitas: The Serial Killer,” currently filming in Mexico City. The series is based on one of Mexico’s most infamous criminal cases, focusing on a killer who targeted elderly women.
The new HBO original is being produced by Exile Content, with Humberto Hinojosa (“The Head of Joaquín Murrieta,” “Luis Miguel: The Series”) serving as showrunner and co-director alongside J.M. Cravioto (“El Chapo”). According to Mariano César, head of general entertainment content, Warner Bros. Discovery Latin America & U.S. Hispanic, the series “combines the suspense and tension of a compelling crime thriller with a distinctly Mexican perspective that is woven throughout the story.”
Hinojosa stated that upon receiving the material from Arturo Sampson of Exile Content, he believed they could create a series with strong thriller elements – police work, investigation, and a serial killer – all within an intriguing and entertaining plot. He noted, “It’s uncommon in Spanish-language storytelling, particularly in Mexico, to see popular, culturally significant cases wrapped in a genre-driven story where suspense and thriller elements take center stage.” Hinojosa also expressed his attraction to the series’ willingness to explore darker themes while maintaining “a glimmer of light.”
Cravioto described the series as a “premium thriller that can resonate not only in Mexico, but anywhere in the world,” emphasizing its blend of Mexico’s cultural imagination with sophisticated genre conventions and a cinematic approach. He highlighted the challenges of achieving a high standard of quality in the visual aspects of the production, including cinematography, production design, and rhythm. “We want the series to stand out and break away from the conventions of national productions,” he said.
César concluded, “We believe the strength of the story and the caliber of the talent behind it will resonate with audiences both in Latin America and around the world.” The series consists of six episodes.
