Todd Haynes, Frances McDormand, and Zhang Ziyi are among the filmmakers and actors set to appear at the 18th edition of the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon. The festival, led by Thierry Frémaux, will also honor Joel and Ethan Coen with its Lumière Award for lifetime achievement.
Haynes will deliver a masterclass with longtime producer Christine Vachon and present restorations of his films “Poison” (1991) and “Safe” (1995). Programming head Maelle Arnaud noted Haynes is “a great cinephile,” adding, “He’ll introduce a lot of screenings, but we also want him to enjoy the festival as a movie buff. He’ll be a great guest not only for what he contributes as a guest, but as a spectator, too.”
Three-time best actress Oscar winner Frances McDormand will join Joel and Ethan Coen in Lyon to receive the Lumière Award. Other highlights include Robert Eggers hosting an overnight program featuring his “Nosferatu” (2024), Zhang Ziyi introducing Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000), and Tsui Hark revisiting his “Peking Opera Blues” (1986). The festival will also showcase previews of Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Minotaur” and Lukas Dhont’s “Coward,” both of which were presented at Cannes.
Additionally, the festival will feature television content, with Bérénice Bejo and Irène Jacob presenting the opening episodes of “Alice,” a series about pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy. Nadine Labaki will present a tribute spanning her films “Caramel” (2007) and “Capernaum” (2018), while Agnès Jaoui will discuss her cinematic influences and revisit her debut, “The Taste of Others” (2000). Independent U.S. filmmaker Abel Ferrara will bring his “Bad Lieutenant” (1992) and memoir “Scène. Mémoires.”
Arnaud emphasized the festival’s commitment to showcasing both classic and new films, stating, “From the beginning, we wanted no separation between films of the past and new films, because they are all part of cinema history.” She added that being part of a festival that celebrates this history is “an important promotion for the film.”
