Google Earth’s new AI image editing tool was swiftly removed from the platform just one day after its launch due to concerns over its potential for misuse. The tool allowed users to manipulate images, and examples quickly surfaced demonstrating how it could be used to create realistic deepfakes.
The Verge reported that the AI editor enabled the creation of fabricated imagery, including depictions of refugees and bomb craters. This capability raised immediate red flags regarding the spread of misinformation and potential for malicious applications.
Google did not provide a statement beyond announcing the tool’s removal. The quick decision to pull the feature suggests the company underestimated the ease with which it could be exploited to generate deceptive content. While Google had intended the AI editor as a creative function within Google Earth, its capacity to produce convincing but false visuals proved problematic.
