Germany’s Sovereign Tech Agency is providing a €508,640 investment to Flatpak over the next two years. The funding, delivered through the Sovereign Tech Fund, will focus on strengthening the app sandboxing capabilities of the platform and developing new features by the end of 2027.
The investment will support the development of new portals centered around audio integration with PipeWire, enhanced network isolation features, and a VPN portal modeled after those found in Android and iOS. Additionally, a new portal for spell checking and writing assistance is planned, along with exploration of password auto-fill functionality.
Efforts will also be made to create a new “entitlements” system for declaring static permissions for specific portals, and “intents” to declare offered services. Maintenance of existing portals will also be included as part of the project. The Sovereign Tech Agency previously invested in the GNOME project, which contributed to some Flatpak efforts.
