Méven Car detailed recent improvements to the Dolphin file manager 26.08 release and the KIO framework. Benchmarks show significant speed increases in copying numerous small files.
According to a pair of blog posts by Méven Car, the Dolphin 26.08 release includes new features and performance enhancements, particularly within the KIO framework. Recent work has focused on improving the speed of file operations.
Benchmarks reveal that copying many small files is now more than twice as fast compared to April. This improvement diminishes as file sizes increase, as expected. Car explains the gains stem from reducing per-file overhead; once files reach a megabyte in size, the overhead becomes negligible.
While KIO currently performs more operations than the `cp` command, the difference is not fivefold. Work to close the remaining gap through batching is ongoing. Car previously discussed the comparison with `cp` in a July post.
