KDE developer Akseli Lahtinen announced the initial release of Union QtWidgets, enabling QtWidgets-based applications like Kate and Dolphin to utilize Union CSS files for styling. This development aims to address fragmentation in KDE’s styling methods and provide a shared source of truth for Breeze QtWidgets and QtQuick styles.
Union premiered in KDE Plasma 6.7 as a new CSS-based style and theming engine. The goal of Union is to unify the styling of KDE applications. The initial release of Union QtWidgets allows applications built with QtWidgets – including Kate editor and Dolphin file manager – to use Union CSS files.
While some styling issues currently exist, with certain aspects appearing misaligned, developers are actively working to resolve them. Lahtinen noted, “This is the first time ever Breeze QtWidgets and QtQuick style have same shared source-of-truth as an easily editable file! (Excluding colorschemes.) So some of these designs are made with QtQuick in mind, so they can look a bit off in QtWidgets.”
The Union QtWidgets support is expected to be integrated into the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.8 release.
