UC Berkeley engineers assembled the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) detector on July 8, 2026. The telescope will study energetic phenomena in the Milky Way and beyond, focusing on the creation and destruction of matter and antimatter, and the final stages of stellar evolution.
The COSI mission is a collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory; the University of California, San Diego; the Naval Research Laboratory; NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center; Northrop Grumman; Space Dynamics Laboratory; and the Italian Space Agency, as well as numerous research institutions.
The detector assembly features four pieces of silver material covering flex circuits, which transmit signals from the detectors to the readout electronics.
