The Los Angeles Chargers began the 2026 NFL season with a 26-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. While Justin Herbert reached a passing milestone, the Chargers struggled with offensive efficiency, injuries, and defensive lapses.
Ladd McConkey was a bright spot for the Chargers’ offense, recording five receptions for 82 yards and an eight-yard touchdown in the third quarter before sustaining a chest injury. David Njoku also made an immediate impact in his first game with Los Angeles, catching all five of his targets for 58 yards and establishing himself as the team’s primary tight end option. Justin Herbert became the fourth-fastest player in NFL history to reach 25,000 passing yards, achieving the mark in the fourth quarter despite the game being out of reach. He entered the game needing 180 yards.
The Chargers’ offense, led by coach Mike McDaniel, was considered mediocre, averaging 5.3 yards per play with poor third-down (2-for-8) and fourth-down (0-for-3) conversion rates. The running game also underperformed, gaining only 81 yards. Herbert threw for 209 yards, was sacked three times, and committed a critical interception into double coverage. Several players suffered injuries during the game, including McConkey (chest/hip), KeAndre Lambert-Smith (hamstring), and Elijah Molden (hamstring).
Defensively, the Chargers allowed 393 total yards, and Chris O’Leary’s debut as defensive coordinator was marred by a slow start, as Arizona drove down the field on its opening series. The Cardinals controlled the time of possession 37:31 to 22:29. Tight end Trey McBride proved difficult to contain, finishing with nine receptions for 95 yards and the game-sealing three-yard touchdown pass. A special teams breakdown resulted in a blocked punt, with the ball bounding backward to the Chargers’ own 3-yard line, immediately leading to a Cardinals score.
