Celtic is reportedly monitoring Liverpool defender Luke Chambers ahead of a potential loan move in the January transfer window. The 22-year-old, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, could provide depth to Celtic’s defensive lineup.
Chambers progressed through Liverpool’s academy and spent last season on loan at Kilmarnock, Wigan Athletic, and Charlton Athletic to gain first-team experience. He featured four times under Jurgen Klopp before those loan spells. Despite a strong pre-season showing as a centre-half, the arrival of Ronald Araújo on loan from Barcelona and the retention of Kostas Tsimikas have pushed Chambers down the pecking order at Liverpool.
Celtic views Chambers as a long-term solution at left-back, with current first-choice Kieran Tierney expected to be in his 30s next season. Liam Scales currently serves as Tierney’s backup. Celtic, who recently secured a loan deal for Landon Emenalo from Chelsea, believe Chambers’ traits – overlapping runs, dangerous deliveries, defensive anticipation, and composure – would be a good fit for the team.
According to the report, a loan move would allow Chambers to gain stability and regular gametime, while a couple of seasons as Tierney’s understudy would help him adapt to the Scottish game before potentially becoming a starter. Liverpool is unlikely to loan Chambers with his contract expiring, as it would not benefit the club.
