Asahi Linux developers announced official support for Apple M3 series Macs, excluding the Mac Studio M3 Ultra. While "almost" all functionality is present, mirroring support for M1 and M2 hardware, significant caveats exist, particularly regarding graphics processing and sleep functionality.
According to the developers, the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max devices now function with the latest Asahi Linux builds. However, GPU support is currently not performant or power efficient for 3D acceleration, with improvements anticipated in the coming months. Sleep support is also unavailable due to a lack of DCP (Display Connector Protocol) support, which also disables the HDMI port on M3 MacBooks.
The team notes that upstreaming of M3 support to the mainline Linux kernel is ongoing, with initial boot support present. Full parity with the Asahi Linux implementation will require further patches in Linux 7.4+. More information can be found at AsahiLinux.org.
