Patrick Volkerding released Slackware 16 Alpha 1 on Saturday, following updates to the GNU toolchain including GCC 16.2, Binutils 2.47, and Glibc 2.44. The release, which comes four and a half years after Slackware 15, includes a rebuilt system powered by the Linux 6.18 LTS kernel.
Volkerding noted the updates in his Slackware64-current change-log, stating, “Upgraded to binutils-2.47, gcc-16.2.0, and glibc-2.44, and compiled everything with them. There might be a light at the end of the tunnel, eh? Cheers, and have a good weekend.” The update also includes upgrades to packages like Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, and libxml2 for security and bug fixes.
The release of Slackware 16 Alpha 1 follows the recent implementation of KDE Plasma 6 desktop packages. The development trajectory suggests Slackware 16 may be released at a quicker pace than Slackware 15, which followed a longer development cycle after the 2012 release of Slackware 14. The LILO bootloader remains in use within the Slackware operating system.
