Paris-based Alpha Violet has picked up international sales rights to German filmmaker Naëmi Ada’s debut feature, “Body of Glass,” ahead of its premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The psychological drama stars Soma Pysall as Tian, a dancer escaping a controlling relationship.
The film follows Tian after a violent incident with her partner and choreographer, Felix, prompting her to flee Marseille. She seeks connection by inserting herself into the life of a grieving man, becoming involved in their mourning while harboring a dangerous secret. The cast also includes Élise Tilloloy, Tom Rey, Manuel Severin, and Younès Boucif.
Producers on “Body of Glass” are Timothée Boullié, Victoria Braunholz, Naëmi Ada, Silvana Santamaría, Pierre Cazenave-Kaufman, Amel Belghitri and Sinan Özarslan. The film is a Germany-France co-production from Soilfilms and Soldats Features.
Alpha Violet co-founder Virginie Devesa stated the company was “immediately struck by a film that refuses to make its characters easy to categorise as victim or perpetrator.” She added that the film’s “exploration of taking back control of your body and your life is bold, provocative and pushed to an extreme.” Devesa also highlighted the film’s focus on physicality, noting, “The body itself becomes a distinctive presence.” Alpha Violet anticipates the film will “spark a lot of conversation.”
Naëmi Ada trained in contemporary dance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds and later studied directing at Berlin’s German Film and Television Academy. She was a 2019 Sundance Ignite Fellow. “Body of Glass” will screen on Sept. 19 as part of the New Directors competition at the 74th San Sebastián Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 18-26.
