Tyler Perry’s latest film, “Why Did I Get Married Again?”, revisits the characters from the original movies, now dealing with the challenges of their adult children. The film opens with Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) preparing to host a dinner in anticipation of their daughter Jasmine’s wedding to Wesley, the son of Roselyn (Taraji P. Henson). The couple has invited their friends Shelley (Jill Scott) and Troy (Lamman Rucker), and Diane (Sharon Leal) and Terry (Tyler Perry), all of whom have children in their early twenties.
Complicating matters is Shelley’s ex-boyfriend, Mike (Richard T. Jones), who is now dating Angela and Marcus’s son, Marcus Jr.’s (Da’Vinchi) ex-girlfriend. The younger generation’s storylines primarily serve to reflect the issues of the older characters. For example, Marcus Jr. is portrayed as a “hot-headed skirt-chaser” mirroring his father’s past behavior, while Terry and Diane worry their son T.J. (Jaden Michael) is too reserved. The film largely focuses on the older characters’ reactions to the younger generation’s actions, with dialogue often consisting of observations like, “Marcus Jr. is just like you used to be, Marcus.”
The film highlights a tonal disconnect between the generations, with the older characters being openly confrontational about their problems while the younger characters appear “bland.” Marcus Jr., described as the “lone bad egg” among the new characters, receives criticism for attempting to reconnect with his ex-girlfriend. Despite this, the film includes “quite sensitive scenes” for the female characters, such as Shelley’s fears.
