The latest season of the hit show, after what critics describe as a tidy conclusion to the first three seasons, promised fresh storylines for its expanded cast. However, according to a report from *The Hollywood Reporter*, the season has introduced supporting characters who lack development and relies on familiar tropes.
Episode six, set on Zelda’s boat during a New Year’s Eve celebration, is highlighted as a key example. The episode features a love triangle involving Roy Kent, Keeley Jones, and Erin, with Roy briefly hospitalized after an injury during a jump-around to House of Pain’s “Jump Around” with Jamie Tartt. Keeley overhears a partial confession of love intended for her, mistaking it for one meant for Erin. The report calls this a “lazy trope” seen in numerous other shows.
Rebecca Welton’s storyline also draws criticism, with a brief, unconvincing will-they-won’t-they dynamic with Jamie Tartt, who is now promoting his Old Testament-themed alcoholic beverage. The Lady Greyhounds, the women’s football team, are given limited development, with the writers offering only “snippets and small gags” instead of the rich storytelling afforded to the men’s team in previous seasons. This, the report states, results in the series “falling into the same trap—leaving its women underdeveloped and lacking support.”
The episode also features a scene where Ted Lasso spends New Year’s Eve discussing their history with his ex-partner. The series still has time to improve, but a turnaround is needed quickly to make the season a memorable return, according to the report.
