The second season of Saturday Night Live UK will premiere on September 9th with host Jeff Goldblum and musical guest CMAT. The show, a spin-off of the long-running NBC sketch program, received a generally positive reception for its first season, which aired earlier this year.
The inaugural host of season one was U.S. star and SNL hall-of-famer Tina Fey. The Hollywood Reporter’s review of the London-based show determined it had a “good cast, spotty writing, like the mothership.” The first episode attracted over 220,000 viewers in Britain. Jamie Dornan, Riz Ahmed, Jack Whitehall, Nicola Coughlan, Aimee Lou Wood, Hannah Waddingham and Ncuti Gatwa hosted during the first season.
Season one featured sketches including a spoof skincare advert where the women were so young their partners were arrested for being paedophiles, a parody of *The Traitors* involving a giant crab, and “The Prince Andrew Plan,” which posited that all royal family mishaps over the last three decades were orchestrated to make King Charles look better.
Joining the cast for season two is Freddie Meredith, recently featured in BBC’s *Such Brave Girls*. Ania Magliano and Paddy Young, Weekend Update presenters from the first season, both secured sold-out comedy shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last month.
Upcoming hosts for season two include actor-comedian Jamie Demetriou (known for *Fleabag*, *Stath Lets Flats*, and *Barbie*) on September 19th with musical guest Royal Blood, and Amelia Dimoldenberg, presenter of *Chicken Shop Date*, on September 26th with English singer Rachel Chinouriri. Dimoldenberg’s appearance coincides with the end of *Chicken Shop Date* after 12 years.
Laura Claxton has been promoted to SNL UK co-head writer, joining existing head writer Jonno Johnson. Liz Clare returns as director, Heather MacVean joins as costume designer, and Sinead Oldnall is the new director of on-screen talent. Lorne Michaels serves as executive producer, and James Longman is lead producer.
