Alexandra Artrip, who played Antonia Owens in the 1998 film “Practical Magic,” responded to criticism regarding the decision to recast her and Evan Rachel Wood in the upcoming sequel. Wood, who played Kylie Owens, previously stated that no one from the original production had contacted her, though she received a message from Joey King, who now plays Kylie. Artrip emphasized the need to support the new film and the production team’s choices.
Artrip addressed the concerns in an Instagram video, stating, “I love hearing your stories and connections to the film…but I just don’t want my stuff to be a space for negativity. Maisie and Joey are lovely actresses, and I’m sure the production team did what they thought was best for the film to be successful.” She expressed excitement about expanding the “Practical Magic” world with new content and revisiting cherished memories.
Susanne Bier, director of “Practical Magic 2,” explained the recastings to Variety, stating it “wasn’t personal.” She clarified that the characters are meant to be recent college graduates, necessitating younger actors. Bier said, “We had to recast and we had to get some kids that [had been out of college].”
“Practical Magic 2” is scheduled to release in theaters on September 10.
