Josef Coxaj stars in “Nosotros,” a new film premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie follows Romero, an Indigenous man from the Guatemalan highlands, as he navigates life and love in Guatemala City.
The film, a feature directorial debut from Guatemalan producer Joaquín Ruano, will have its world premiere on September 12 as part of TIFF’s Discovery program. It centers on Romero (Josef Coxaj), a security guard who leaves his Indigenous family for work in the capital. He faces “an unfamiliar environment, estrangement, loneliness and a ‘performative macho milieu,’” according to a synopsis on the TIFF website.
Romero falls for Nubia (Lola Vásquez), a transgender small business owner at the mall he patrols, “discovering an unexpected refuge and a new sense of self in a world not yet ready to make space for them.” Mayra Salvador also appears in the film. The movie also touches on the lingering scars of Guatemala’s civil war.
Press notes describe “Nosotros” as “an intimate portrait of two people finding connection within a society where racism, transphobia, economic inequality, and deeply entrenched ideas of masculinity determine whose lives – and whose desires – are allowed space.” Paolo Girón served as cinematographer, and César Díaz as editor.
