The team behind the film *Ink*, director Danny Boyle, writer James Graham, and star Jack O’Connell, discussed the film’s surprising success at the Venice and Telluride film festivals. The film focuses on the relationship between Rupert Murdoch and Larry Lamb in 1960s London.
O’Connell noted he was still processing the positive reception after the Venice premiere, adding that the response in Telluride also seemed very positive. Graham described the “extraordinary glamour” of Venice and reflected on the festival’s 83rd edition, while Boyle admitted he was surprised *Ink* was selected for Venice, stating he hadn’t expected international distribution. He said the film’s appeal was initially expected to be limited to Britain, given its focus on The Sun newspaper and Fleet Street.
Graham explained the play on which the film is based originated in a small London theater with 350 seats before moving to the West End and Broadway. He believes the film’s specific British setting contributes to its universal appeal, framing it as an origin story relevant to contemporary issues of social media, AI, truth, and post-truth. He stated, “every single person around the world, I think, will be able to draw the line between that moment — the crossroads in our discourse and our news — to what we’re all living with today.”
Boyle confirmed he had seen Graham’s play in 2019, praising it as a “wonderful evening.”
