The upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” film commenced production without a completed screenplay, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo say this is standard practice for their improvisation-based approach. The film’s development was spurred by the departure of Jonathan Majors and the subsequent overhaul of the planned “The Kang Dynasty” movie. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role, this time as the villain Doctor Doom.
Joe Russo told the Associated Press, “We always view the script as a living organism.” He explained that the Russo Brothers favor a rehearsal-based directing style, allowing actors to influence their characters. “We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don’t get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that’s when the magic happens.”
Anthony Russo added that their collaboration with Marvel allows them to focus on specific intersections within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Our job isn’t to answer for the entirety of the MCU,” he said. “We intersect it in a very specific way. It’s that intersection which is where we can make sense of things.”
This approach contrasts with that of James Gunn, who, after transitioning to DC Studios, vowed to only begin production on films with finalized scripts. Gunn stated last year to Rolling Stone that he believes the decline of the movie industry is largely due to films starting production without finished screenplays, citing an instance where DC Studios “killed a project” due to an unready script.
