George Lucas previewed the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, describing the 17-year project as a monumental undertaking. The 300,000 square foot museum will feature a vast collection of narrative art, including pieces from Lucas’s own collection and iconic props from the *Star Wars* films.
Lucas, along with his wife Mellody Hobson, has been developing the museum concept for 17 years. He stated, “I’m fascinated by doing things that people say can’t be done.” He added, “This one almost broke my will.” Lucas explained his focus on narrative art stems from a desire to honor illustrators and the power of combining imagery with storytelling, particularly myths.
The museum’s collection extends beyond *Star Wars*, encompassing works by Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Maxfield Parrish, Frank Frazetta, and examples of photography, comic book art, and Western paintings and sculptures. Movie-themed pieces on display include General Grievous’ wheel bike from *Revenge of the Sith*, Mace Windu’s costume from *The Phantom Menace* alongside Owen Lars’ swoop bike from *Attack of the Clones*, the Imperial speeder bike from *Return of the Jedi*, and Darth Vader’s costume from *Revenge of the Sith*. Other featured items include a sail barge and sand skiff from *Return of the Jedi*, Anakin’s airspeeder from *Attack of the Clones*, and props featuring R2-D2 and C-3PO. The museum also includes a stunt costume from *The Dark Knight*, an Indiana Jones statue, and art from *Conan the Barbarian*.
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, designed by Ma Yansong of MAD with Stansec and landscape architecture by Mia Lehrer, is set to open to the public on September 22.
