Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton in the U.S. Open final on Sunday, securing his first U.S. Open title and ending a Grand Slam drought for American men that stretches back to 2003. Zverev won with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2. The German player, who previously reached the U.S. Open final in 2020, also won the Roland Garros title in June. Following the match, Zverev acknowledged the crowd’s support for his opponent, stating, “I know today 99.9% of the people wanted Ben to win, so I'm very sorry first of all.” Zverev described his victory as the result of years of hard work and perseverance, saying, “I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, how much pain we went through, and I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before.” The win marks Zverev’s second Grand Slam title, after his victory at Roland Garros earlier this year.
