WSL Fans Allowed to Drink in Stands from 2026-27 Season

Women’s Super League and WSL2 clubs have been granted permission to allow supporters to consume alcohol in areas of the stadium with a view of the pitch, effective from the 2026-27 season. This policy change follows the conclusion of an extensive 18-month trial period designed to assess fan behavior and safety under relaxed regulations.

The initial pilot scheme was launched in January 2025 within the second tier of women's football. It involved four specific clubs: Birmingham City, Bristol City, Newcastle United, and Southampton. These teams served as the foundational test cases for the initiative, allowing organizers to gather data on attendance patterns and conduct compliance checks.

Following the initial phase, the scope of the trial was significantly broadened. Before the start of the 2025-26 campaign, the pilot program was expanded across both divisions of the women's game. This expansion included high-profile clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United. The inclusion of these major teams provided a diverse dataset covering various stadium sizes and fan demographics.

In total, the trial involved 20 clubs operating across 29 venues. The comprehensive nature of this study allowed league officials to evaluate the impact of alcohol consumption in standing areas versus seated sections, as well as the overall atmosphere and safety protocols required for such a policy shift. The successful completion of this trial has paved the way for the permanent implementation of the rule.

The decision marks a significant shift in stadium culture for women's football in England. By permitting alcohol sales and consumption in pitch-viewing areas, the league aims to enhance the matchday experience for supporters. This move aligns women's football more closely with traditional men's football customs regarding spectator amenities.

Clubs participating in the WSL and WSL2 will now have the autonomy to decide whether they wish to implement this policy at their respective grounds starting in the 2026-27 season. The league has indicated that ongoing monitoring will continue to ensure that safety standards are maintained as more venues adopt the new guidelines.
