Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany sustained minor injuries Saturday night after the single-engine Beechcraft K35 he was traveling in made an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau, Wisconsin. Tiffany, the Republican nominee for governor, and the pilot swam to safety after the plane lost power while approaching Wausau Downtown Airport. Both were treated at Aspirus Wausau Hospital for minor injuries.
Tiffany was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner when the incident occurred. He stated on X, “After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat.” He expressed gratitude to the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and first responders. The Federal Aviation Administration has announced an investigation into the crash.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Crowley posted on X, stating he was “grateful to God” that Tiffany and the pilot were not seriously hurt, praising the pilot’s heroism. Rescue teams responding to reports of a downed plane confirmed both occupants were alert and conscious upon their arrival. The plane, a four-seat Bonanza aircraft, is now submerged. Tiffany reflected on the experience, stating, “An experience like this reminds you just how precious life is.”
The cause of the plane losing power remains under investigation.
