Actor Cooper Hoffman, new to filming sex scenes, and director Olivia Wilde utilized a pain scale rating system while preparing for the BDSM-themed scenes in Gregg Araki's erotic thriller, “I Want Your Sex.” The method was employed to establish boundaries and ensure comfort during potentially intense moments.
Hoffman had no prior experience with on-screen intimacy when he joined the production. Upon arriving on set, he encountered a variety of props associated with BDSM, including ball gags, stilettos, whips, chains, dildos, and strap-ons, which initially caused some nervousness.
Wilde explained that they used a pain scale to gauge acceptable levels of physicality during the scenes. According to Wilde, she “hit him really hard and” it was “only a seven or eight.” This system allowed them to calibrate the intensity of the simulated acts and ensure Hoffman felt safe and in control throughout the process. The goal was to establish clear communication about boundaries and comfort levels before filming began.
