Westlake High School’s football team (1-0) will face Euless Trinity High School (1-0) on Friday, a matchup that may prove more challenging than their recent victory against an Inglewood, California team. While the win against Inglewood showcased Westlake’s potential, the game against Trinity will provide a better gauge of their postseason capabilities.
Trinity was selected by *Dave Campbell’s Texas Football* to win District 8-6A and ranked within the publication’s preseason top 50. In their Week 1 game, the Trojans defeated Richardson Berkner 28-17. Safety Chayce Davis, an Oklahoma State commit, is a key player for Trinity. Both Westlake and Trinity experienced rare first-round playoff losses last year.
Westlake’s offense, in its first game, featured a balanced attack with 154 passing yards and 67 rushing yards from quarterback Patton Jones, and 81 rushing yards on 18 carries from freshman C.J. Jones. The Chaps ran the ball almost twice as many times as they threw it, a trend expected to continue given their strong offensive line, led by Texas commit Jackson Cook. Braden Riddell, with five catches for 57 yards against Inglewood, provides a receiving threat.
The Westlake defense, led by edge rusher Colton Fromberg (three sacks) and linebacker Tate Lung (eight tackles), allowed 6.7 yards per play and 386 passing yards to Inglewood. Improvement in defensive performance will be crucial.
Euless Trinity employs a run-focused offense, utilizing the I-formation and attempting only 10 passes in Week 1. Quarterback Mack Lineweaver completed six of those passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Running backs Marcus Turner and Trenton Turner combined for 38 carries, 156 yards, and a touchdown. Tight end Kohen Fiefia is a versatile player involved in blocking, rushing, and receiving. Lineweaver is the son of Trinity head coach Aaron Lineweaver. Westlake will also face a similar father-son coaching dynamic later this season against Lake Travis, with Hank and Jason Carter. Trinity is the largest school in its district, with an enrollment of 3,651.
