Universal Music Group (UMG) and ElevenLabs have entered into a licensing agreement to launch an AI-powered music platform. The platform will allow fans to remix tracks, create new interpretations, and experience personalized vocals. This initiative aims to inspire discovery, deepen artist-fan engagement, and unlock new revenue opportunities.
Sir Lucian Grainge, UMG’s Chairman & CEO, stated, “The most exciting possibilities for AI and music are those that put artists, songwriters, and fans at the center…UMG and ElevenLabs are aligned that responsible AI can inspire discovery, deepen engagement between artists and fans, and unlock new revenue opportunities for the creative community.”
The new platform differs from UMG’s other AI collaborations, including those with Hook and Udio, as it involves building an entirely new platform. This announcement follows Suno’s launch of label-powered AI models backed by Warner Music Group, Believe and BMG. UMG and Sony Music Entertainment are currently involved in legal action against Suno over alleged copyright infringement.
ElevenLabs, which raised $500 million in a Series D funding round earlier this year at an $11 billion valuation, is known for licensing voices and intellectual property. The company previously released “The Eleven Album,” a collection of original songs co-created with artists like Liza Minelli and Art Garfunkel, alongside an AI model for composing music. Mati Staniszewski, ElevenLabs co-founder and CEO, added, “AI opens up incredible possibilities for interacting with our favorite music and artists…we’ll enable artists and songwriters to create powerful new experiences for their fans, and ensure they are fairly compensated.”
