Canonical has released Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, the fifth and likely final point release of the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS operating system. The update delivers refreshed installation media with software updates, bug fixes, and security patches accumulated since the initial release, reducing post-installation downloads. More significantly, the release incorporates a new hardware enablement (HWE) stack back-ported from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, featuring the Linux 7.0 kernel and updated graphics drivers.
Existing Ubuntu 24.04 users already received the HWE stack as a software update, meaning they do not need to reinstall to benefit from the changes. The previous release, Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS, utilized the Linux 6.17 kernel. The inclusion of Linux 7.0 is intended to improve hardware support for newer devices. Canonical has also changed how kernel firmware updates are delivered, splitting them into vendor-specific packages mirroring the approach used in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
Users can verify if they have the update by checking Settings > System > About or the GRUB boot loader. If not, installing the ‘base-files’ update via the Software Updater will modify the version number string. While Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS remains the generally recommended LTS for a stable desktop experience, the new ISOs offer an alternative for those who prefer GNOME Shell on Xorg/X11 or require specific packages from the ‘noble’ archives. The original 6.8 kernel remains available for installation.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is supported for a minimum of five years, with security coverage extended to ten years via Ubuntu Pro, and up to fifteen years with a Legacy subscription. Users can upgrade to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS later this month. Download options are available for desktop, Raspberry Pi, server, and other devices from the Ubuntu website, along with updated media for Ubuntu flavors like Kubuntu and Xubuntu.
