Typhoon Bavi made landfall in China’s Zhejiang province late Saturday night after impacting Japan and Taiwan, prompting the evacuation of over one million people. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland.
The typhoon previously brought strong winds and rain to Japan's southern islands and Taiwan, knocking out power in both locations. Taiwanese authorities registered at least 113 injuries from Typhoon Bavi. In the Philippines, the storm triggered deadly landslides. Chinese state media reported that more than half a million people were evacuated in Zhejiang province, with an additional over 100,000 evacuated in neighboring Fujian province.
The scale of evacuations varied across reports, with initial figures citing 600,000 evacuees in China. Later reporting indicated the number exceeded one million as authorities broadened preventative measures. The storm marks the second typhoon to hit China within just over a week’s time. Wenzhou city was reported to be close to the path of the storm and was heavily impacted by evacuation orders.
