President Donald Trump stated he asked FIFA to review the red card issued to U.S. soccer player Folarin Balogun, which would have prevented him from playing in a match against Belgium. According to Trump, FIFA subsequently reversed its decision and rescinded the one-match ban.
The President spoke about the incident Monday to reporters. He stated that he contacted Gianni Infantino, the head of FIFA, requesting a review of the call. Trump claimed he did not believe the play warranted a red card.
Trump said, “I didn’t think it was a foul,” and added that if Balogun had been suspended, it would have left a "big stain" on the World Cup. He stated FIFA “made the right decision” in suspending the ban.
The New York Post reported Trump admitted to making the request to Infantino regarding the red card issued to Balogun, which would have sidelined him for a crucial match against Belgium. The BBC also reported that Trump confirmed he asked FIFA to review the suspension and stated they “made the right decision.”
Sporting News noted the President discussed the incident with reporters on Monday.
