Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and the Nashville International Airport Authority have proposed renaming Nashville International Airport after Dolly Parton, three days after the country music icon died at age 80 following a battle with cancer. The proposal, initially suggested over a year ago via a petition that garnered over 160,000 signatures, aims to create a lasting tribute to Parton’s legacy. Governor Lee spoke with Parton’s team, who expressed appreciation for the idea and openness to further discussion. Doug Kreulen, CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, stated Parton’s values align with the airport’s commitment to dignity, kindness, and opportunity for all. Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also voiced support, noting Parton was collaborating on a Nashville museum project. The Metro Nashville Airport Authority will discuss the proposal and its naming policy at a meeting on September 17. Parton’s contributions extend beyond music through the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, which provides free books to children worldwide. The airport currently uses the code BNA, named after WWI and WWII veteran Col. Harry Smith Berry.
