Stoke City is mourning the death of Harry Burrows, a former forward for the club who passed away at the age of 85. Burrows joined Stoke from Aston Villa in March 1965 for £27,000 and spent eight years with the Potters, scoring 79 goals in 281 appearances. He is currently 13th on Stoke’s all-time top scorers list.
Burrows was a member of the Stoke City team that reached consecutive FA Cup semi-finals in 1971 and 1972. He was unfortunately unable to participate in their 1972 League Cup victory at Wembley due to injury. He later moved to Plymouth in 1973, where he played 19 games and scored three goals.
Former teammate Terry Conroy described Burrows as “a terrific footballer with a cannonball shot, it was once measured as the hardest shot in the game.” Conroy also noted Burrows’ amiable personality, stating, “He was such a genial lad; there are some people in life that everybody gets on with and Harry was one of them.”
