Nacogdoches, Texas – Gavin Rutherford threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns as Stephen F. Austin defeated East Texas A&M 44-7 on Saturday night. The Lumberjacks, ranked 13th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, secured their sixth consecutive home opener victory and extended their winning streak to 12 games dating back to an 0-2 start in 2025.
After a slow start with a three-and-out on their first drive, Stephen F. Austin responded by scoring on their next three possessions to establish a 21-7 lead. An interception near the East Texas A&M 5-yard line further boosted their momentum before halftime. Jaylen Jenkins added a 40-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, and Carlos Alvarado contributed three field goals from 23, 26, and 37 yards.
Preston Alford led the Lumberjacks’ rushing attack with 76 yards on six carries, including a 51-yard run. Clayton Wayland was Rutherford’s primary target, catching all four of his passes for 46 yards. Eric Rodriguez, the quarterback for East Texas A&M, completed 9 of 16 passes for 110 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
East Texas A&M will host Northwestern State next Saturday. Stephen F. Austin will visit Abilene Christian to begin their nonconference schedule.
