SpaceX recently completed testing of its Starship catch mechanism with Ship 42 at Starbase, Texas. The tests involved simulating a catch scenario and practicing reconnection of the quick disconnect arm. Flight 14 is now planned no earlier than September 22.
Ship 42, Flight 15 hardware, underwent multi-day testing at Pad 2, including cryogenic tests and structural integrity checks. These tests simulated flight-like thermal conditions and pressures, utilizing a thrust simulator to induce loads on the aft section. Following testing, Ship 42 returned to the production site for engine installation before returning to Massey’s for a final cryo test on September 9.
On September 11, Ship 42 was lifted into a simulated catch position using the Pad 2 tower’s “chopsticks.” SpaceX personnel worked the chopsticks’ pins and arms against the vehicle, rotating it and lowering it to meet the quick disconnect arm. The covers on the Ship Quick Disconnect plate were closed, and the arm was moved away, indicating a successful test of the reconnection process. The purpose of the test was to practice draining leftover propellant and safing the vehicle after a catch.
Booster 22, also Flight 15 hardware, completed its own cryogenic proof tests and has returned to Mega Bay 1 for engine installation and static fire testing. SpaceX has shifted its focus to Ship 42 and Booster 22 after completing pre-flight testing for Flight 14 hardware. Flight 14 is not planned as a catch attempt, but a successful return could pave the way for catch attempts on Flight 15.
