Sound Open Firmware (SOF) 2.15, an open-source audio DSP firmware stack and driver framework, has been released. The update focuses on enhanced security and new hardware support.
SOF 2.15 introduces user-space, memory-protected module execution. Developers aim to eventually run untrusted vendor DSP modules, and this release includes enhancements to MMU protections to prevent misbehaving or buggy modules from corrupting kernel or other module memory.
The new version adds support for AMD ACP 7.x, which is anticipated to be featured in upcoming AMD Zen 6-based desktop and laptop designs. AMD describes the ACP 7.x audio co-processor as offering “SoundWire DMA/DAI, TDM DAI type, 500µs low-latency timer tuned for ACP.” Support for Intel USB Audio Offload Link (UAOL) is also included, enabling USB audio offload from the CPU to the DSP.
Testing capabilities have been improved with the addition of a QEMU Xtensa target and a POSIX/libFuzzer fuzzing platform for security hardening. Several new audio processing modules are also included: Phase Vocoder, STFT Process, IPC4 Tone generator, FFT, and Selector modules. The release also incorporates a number of security fixes and code hardening measures.
