Tarik Skubal is preparing for an emotional return to Comerica Park on Friday, where he will pitch against the Detroit Tigers just weeks after being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Skubal acknowledged the game will be emotional due to his history with the organization, but emphasized his focus will remain on competing.
Skubal, who previously pitched for the Tigers from 2020 until this month, stated, “I’m sure it will be emotional there just because of the history…But at the end of the day, I’ve got to go play baseball. I’ve got to compete and do what I do well, what makes me a good pitcher. I’ll probably handle the emotions after.” He added that the relationships he built with players will extend beyond baseball, saying, “Those guys are my really good friends. We’re going to have relationships beyond baseball.”
The quick turnaround from teammate to opponent is unusual, as Skubal’s locker was still in the Tigers’ clubhouse in July. He plans to approach the game as he always does, prioritizing performance and letting the baseball take over. He told AM 570 that he takes pride in approaching games the same way regardless of opponent.
Skubal was a key player for the Tigers, winning consecutive American League Cy Young Awards and helping the team reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons. The Tigers traded him due to his approaching free agency and high trade value. He admitted the trade was unexpected.
Skubal has a 2.67 ERA in 77 career appearances at Comerica Park, where the Tigers went 47-28 in his home starts. This season, he has an 8-7 record and 2.91 ERA overall, with a 3.38 ERA in four starts with the Dodgers. Drew Anderson is scheduled to be Detroit’s starting pitcher.
