The Serielizados festival, Spain’s second largest film/TV festival after San Sebastián, has announced its competition programs for its October 19-28 run in Barcelona, with streaming on Filmin to follow.
Headlining the national competition is the second season of Movistar Plus+’s and 100 Balas’ “Celeste,” which won best screenplay at Serielizados 2024 and best series and best actress for Carmen Machi at Series Mania Panorama. Machi returns as tax inspector Sara Santano in a new tax evasion case. Creator Diego San José and director Elena Trapé, who also won best screenplay at Serielizados for “Jakarta in 2025,” will attend the festival with Machi.
Also competing nationally is “Killing a Bear” (“Matar a un oso”), a six-part series co-produced with Arte France, inspired by the 2020 death of a bear named Cachou in the Pyrenees’ Aran Valley. The series stars Eduard Fernández, María Rodríguez Soto, Miki Esparbé, Pol López, Nora Navas and Àlex Monner. The national competition also includes previously announced entries “In Vitro” from HBO Max-3Cat and “Segunda Temporada” from Filmin.
The international competition will be topped by the French-German-Dutch co-production “Etti,” based on the diaries of Etty Hillesum, with creator Hagai Levi expected to attend. The drama follows a young woman’s affair with her psychologist in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, and screened at Venice and Series Mania. Arte France will also showcase the French series “Camarades,” for which Manon Kneuzé won a best actress prize at Series Mania. “Camarades” is set during the May 1968 student uprisings and will premiere on arte.tv on September 16.
From the U.K., BBC comedy “Ann Droid,” about a self-help robot, has been picked up by Spanish streaming services and is expected to be popular with festival viewers.
